The Northern side of Rotušės (Town hall) square in Kaunas

Address:

It is assumed that in the 15th century, when the town start to expand, the castle still remained significant for the defence of the town, thus this territory was retained without buildings for security purposes, although this notion of security was observed only partially. The research indicated that the town expanded in this direction as well. The area contained mostly wooden buildings since pieces of bricks were rarely found. In the 16th-17th centuries most land plots of the block near the Rotušės (Town Hall) square, between M. Valančiaus and A. Jakšto streets contained stone buildings: in the records of 1603-1682 stone buildings were mentioned, either as constructed in the six out of seven land plots or as ruined during the war with Moscow. At the moment there are signs remaining of some of the buildings.
