About

The webpage, designed for the architectural history and heritage of Kaunas Old Town, is a part of Lithuanian Education Council programme’s “Cultural development projects” project “The architectural-urban spaces of Kaunas Old Town: historical legacy and its interpretations” (contract No. MIP-089/2013). The project is being implemented in the Department of Philosophy and Psychology of Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. Partners of the project: Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities of Vytautas Magnus University and Kaunas History Centre and Architectural History and Heritage research centre of Kaunas University of Technology.

The project is designed for the research of the architectural and urban heritage of Kaunas Old Town and giving a sense for the research in the wider society and heritage work. The project will be carried out on the basis of an already established architectural history and heritage research centre database www.autc.lt Based on the data of historical, architectural and archaeological surveys, the project will seek to argumentatively reveal the cultural and historical entity of the Old Town area from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

The project aims to enable the use of the information about the on-going historical, archaeological and art research about Kaunas Old Town for the wider public dispersion (by creating new webpages for training and tourism) by evoking cultural mind, to develop a younger generation that recognizes its history and material heritage (Vytautas Magnus University Kaunas History Centre has organized the first Kaunas history Olympiad for students). It is expected that an innovative environment will encourage the society and students to take interest in the past. In such a way a peculiar old Kaunas city guide will be prepared, where Kaunas Old Town is interpreted as a widely perceived socio-cultural environment.
