It is thought that during the planning of the town five possessions directed towards the square and belonging to the townspeople were formed on the eastern border of the square. Only the meagre amount data with regards to the archaeological research of this location can be found in the archives. There is some data available in the archives on the water supply system installed in these buildings. It consisted of pine tree pipes connected by iron sleeves. This type of water supply system was known throughout the whole of the Baltic Sea region. Using similar types from other towns, the water supply system can be dated to the first half of the 17th century. The water supply system in Kaunas was mentioned in historical sources as early as in 1568, when the townspeople preferred to hide from the plague in the houses with running water. The early stone buildings are indicated by the discoveries of chips of bricks in the deepest layers. It is stated in the sources that stone buildings were constructed on these land plots in the second half of the 16th century, and even earlier in some parts.
