Archaeological research of Vilniaus Street in Kaunas

Address: Kauno m. sav., Kauno m., Vilniaus g.

The archaeological research of the cultural layers revealed that Vilniaus Street is one of the oldest in Kaunas old town and started to form in the 14th century as the road to the castle. The discoveries that are dated earliest are from the 15th century, and were found above the formed street layer and not directly on the ground. The street was maintained by laying sand and gravel in some parts of the street as early as the 15th century. Later, the street was widened and a foundation laid at the same time. There were up to seven different time period surfaces discovered in the street, thus the street surface was laid and repaired at least seven times. At the end of the 16th century – beginning of the 17th century, during the years in which Kaunas flourished, the street had high quality equipment – the road was laid in logs and had a four metre wide wooden pavement.
